Character NAME: Tomoe
Canon & MEDIUM: Kamisama Hajimemashita, Manga
Canon PULL-POINT: Chapter 93
Character AGE: Looks to be about 17, but is actually around 500+
Character ABILITIES:While it may seem like an over-exaggeration when people say that Tomoe is the second strongest known yokai, it’s actually not an exaggeration at all for his abilities are quite vast which is a fact that is reflected by the amount of respect he receives from other yokai. Tomoe, in actuality, has been around for at least 500 years despite looking like he is nothing more than a 17 year old young man and, thus, has made quite the name for himself over the years.
Foxfire ‣ Tomoe is able to control flames that can be used in several ways. One is, of course, to fight off an enemy. The other is to illuminate places, like the time he made a way to the Mikage Shrine lighting for the event organized by Nanami.
Cloning ‣ Tomoe can make an exact replica of another person's body itself. Sometimes, for example, he has gone to school disguised as Nanami when she is busy, absent, or sick.
Hiding demonic appearances ‣ Tomoe can hide his demonic appearance, but without releasing his powers. Tomoe can also make other demons hide their appearance as he did with Himemiko at the request of Nanami to exit with Kotarou.
Restoration ‣ With his powers Tomoe is able to restore the shrine, making it an impossible task usually by anyone else.
Character HISTORY:( ❖ )
Prior to what is already known, little to no light has been shed regarding Tomoe’s past. It has been confirmed that he has long forgotten his birthday, thus, his official age is unknown even to himself. In addition, he also admits that he has no memory of a family and has never had anyone even close to being considered as such.
Before meeting Mikage, the previous land god of the Mikage Shrine, Tomoe had lived a life which consisted of massacring both humans and demons alike for the sake of entertainment alongside his partner in crime, Akura-ou. Due to this, he was tracked by Ikusagami and was fatally injured. Because of the wounds he sustained, he soon ran away despite feeling quite confident in the fact he would manage to escape unscathed. Unfortunately for him, humans soon began hunting him down while he was still injured which led to him jumping into the river and transforming into that of a young child. Truth be told, this is the beginning of “his story” and his “past”.
At this point in time, Nanami (the future land god of the Mikage Shrine) had found the young Tomoe while traveling to the past in order to save the Tomoe of 500 years later from his death due to a contract he had made in the past to become a human. When Nanami had saved him, he fell in love with her for, in that one single moment, she had stolen his heart as she had hugged his unconscious form to her chest. Because she wasn’t someone from the past, but the future, Nanami never once allowed Tomoe to see her face and only ever allowed him to hear her voice. Thanks to Fuuta, Tomoe believed that “Nanami” was, in fact, “Yukiji”, who was another girl who looked almost identical to Nanami but hates yokai due to them killing her entire family and burning her home village.
After some time had passed, and Tomoe was fully healed and returned back to Akura-ou, he still was not acting like himself due to his fascination to this “Yukiji” woman. For quite some time, he kept to himself as he pondered about her and the reason he didn’t kill her when he had the chance. Due to this change in attitude, Akura-ou soon grew jealous and demanded that they find this Yukiji woman and kill her. When he asked Tomoe if he had any qualms about that, he simply replied with, “I don’t care” and it is at this point where he decided that he will kill this flower, ie; Yukiji. Shortly after hearing that Akura-ou was after Yukiji, Nanami decided to stand in as Yukiji’s substitute in the wedding palanquin as a decoy.
With Nanami now standing in as a decoy on the palanquin, Kirakabuki, a yokai obsessed with death and beauty, tracked down the palanquin that Nanami had been on where she had been posed as Yukiji and hunted her down. He poisoned her, with a poison that heavily restricted her movements starting from her legs all the way up to her head. After his poison had taken effect, Tomoe soon injuredKirakabuki and claimed that Yukiji was his prey. He then took her to an abandoned cabin in the mountains and attempted to rape her, but soon changed his mind when she began to cry. He then admitted that her crying face made him go insane.
The next day, the poison slowly began to wear off and Nanami can somewhat move around more easily. Tomoe then leaned in closer to her, commenting that the poison was still in her system. He leaned in for a kiss which Nanami soon rejected out of fear that he would become her familiar again. When she tried explaining to him that she couldn’t stay with him, but was happy to see him, he told her that he didn’t care about her opinion and that she was just a toy he was playing with out of boredom. He also said that if he so wished, he could burn her to ash. At this point, Nanami yelled at him and told him that she hated him which stung had deeply stung for a reason unknown to him and leaves her to her own devices after she yells in his ear.
As he broods about her words whilst sitting in a tree, he soon noticed some humans walking towards the abandoned cabin he had found and soon discovered that they are mountain bandits. Nanami, now freezing cold, begins shivering and thinking about how this Tomoe and Akura-ou were the same, but soon corrected herself as Tomoe was much more gentle. While she is thinking this she is spotted by the bandits who try to rape her but Tomoe, once again, comes to the rescue as he burns them alive. Hower, because of Nanami begging him not to kill them, a few of them survives but only so long as Nanami told him that she didn’t hate him. In the end, she tells him that she doesn’t.
Character PERSONALITY:Compared to the Tomoe 500 years in the future, this version is a lot less tame and a lot more wild and ferocious. He is less of a housewife, and more like a serial killer in how you can’t predict their actions or read their thoughts very well. Tomoe likes to use his claws to hurt people, but he finds no pleasure in pointless massacres which is something his partner in crime and self-claimed brother, Akura-ou, is famous for.
Despite his initial appearance of that of a murderous and merciless villain, he is actually someone who understands the pain of humans. It’s true that Tomoe does, indeed, hold a gentler side to his personality but it can easily be overlooked as he is quick to hide it with cruel words such as, “You are nothing but a toy I am playing with out of mere boredom and, if I so wished it, I could burn you to ashes”. In addition to the already listed traits, he is someone who treasures his things as he will go to great lengths to hide the things he considers precious which, to Akura-ou, is like a game as he will find these clothes and/or objects and proceed to ruin them (ie; wearing Tomoe’s good kimonos and getting bloodstains all over them).
While it’s true that he has quite a way to go before calming down to the lengths of the Tomoe of 500 years later, he does still retain certain aspects of his future self such as being mortal enemies with boredom and having quite the short fuse, but he is still quite different when compared to his later self who is a lot more tame. In Akura-ou’s own words, Tomoe is quite the difficult guy to get along with and not someone you can easily make friends with due to his attitude which seems to radiate on the scales of “I’m so much better than you” — even his clothes (or, at the very least, his good clothes) have been described as giving off a feeling of that of a prince and, thus, that of royalty.
Ruthless with his words, the Tomoe of the past is known to test how far someone will go. If they say that they would gladly do something for him for, he wants to see just how far. At one point in time while he went away for a couple of days, a fellow fox yokai admitted that they would be willing to lay down their life if it was for him and so when the god, Ikusagami, came declaring that he would kill Tomoe for disturbing the human world, Tomoe had no problem with urging the woman to “Go and die for him” for it was, after all, what she said she would ‘gladly do’. However, even though it seemed like he was being cruel at first, he was actually willing to protect the woman from falling at the hand of the god he had angered as he appears to hide her shrine while saying to himself “Please leave... please consider this as my parting gift... you certainly will not fall for anyone and live alone forever.”
Even when he has Akura-ou as a self-proclaimed “brother”, Tomoe is the type who could be considered overly prideful as he is constantly relying on his own inner strength as opposed to teaming up with others. This Tomoe, unlike how the him of 500 years later does, has no sense of direction in life and, thus, feels bored quite often as he has no “purpose” which would most likely explain why he occasionally joins in on Akura-ou's hunts for it gives him something to do and prevents him from falling victim to the ever poisonous boredom.
Despite visiting brothels quite often, it’s easy to mistake him as a ‘womanizer’ but that would imply that he is someone who actually enjoys seducing women. The truth is that he doesn’t visit those places for the sake of ‘getting laid’. In fact, more than anything, places like brothels are more like a place where he goes to have an ego boost. Whenever he goes to those places the women do two things when he visits — the first, they fight over him which makes him feel needed. The second, they treat him with the highest of respect. However, he does have his limits and after a while the predictable attitude grows tiresome as he grows bored of the predictability of it all.
Tomoe is the type of guy who hates how ‘easy’ prostitutes are in brothels for they just surrender to him and fall at his feet as soon as he walks in. In the end they only want one thing and one thing only. With every visit they become more and more obedient which bores him more during every visit and so , because of this, the boredom he feels intensifies for the sadist in him hates the fact that his ‘prey’ is so submissive and easy to catch.
Which brings us back to Yukiji—or otherwise confirmed as Nanami—for she, unlike the countless amount of women he has slept with, actually fought back when he attempted to make a move on her and on more than one occasion, too. Unlike the many women he has slept with, Yukiji isn’t obedient and defies Tomoe as she rejects all his attempts at seducing her and this, naturally, fascinates him as it is the first time he has ever wanted to actually own someone and not just for the sake of sleeping with them. In a sense, Yukiji is a new interesting game he found and the more she rejects him, the more he wants her.
At some disclosed point in time, Tomoe begins to fall in love with Yukiji as opposed to simply wanting to own her. Due to this, he goes to a mountain god to make a contract and that allows him to turn into a human so he could live his entire life alongside the woman he now considers his soulmate, ‘Yukiji’. Shortly after meeting the land god of the Mikage Shrine, Tomoe even admits that he loved Yukiji so deeply that he shed tears for her death as his exact words were, “I loved her... more than anything in this world. I would’ve traded the whole world just to have stayed with her”, which is why it is safe to presume that she tamed him considerably compared to what he was before.
While Yukiji is the main focus of his character development throughout the series, Akura-ou holds some credit as well for, to Tomoe, he was like that annoying younger brother and/or cousin who is constantly stealing his things and always wanting his attention. Simply put, Akura-ou is more of a ‘monster’ than Tomoe for while he, also, does things out of boredom he also does it in a way of getting Tomoe’s attention. For example, he went as far as starting—yet another—massacre just so Tomoe’s attention could shift back to him which, truth be told, annoys Tomoe quite a lot but he just about tolerates Akura-ou’s way of doing things not because he likes him, but because he is the only ‘family’ he has. That, and he is batshit insane so god knows what he would do if he actually left him for good.
Tomoe is actually the person who found Akura-ou rather than the other way around. The only reason he spoke to him was simply because he was bored and he seemed like a good way to kill some time. He had never intended to stay with him for as long as he did for he was, again, just something to kill time with but Akura-ou seemed to be quite fond of him, but that was most likely because he was strong and it was said that he liked strong people as well as strong looking weapons.
Akura-ou, in a sense, is someone who wants more and more power but he doesn’t have a limit so he is constantly hungry for it. Over the course of time, Akura-ou seems to get more and more interested in Tomoe to the point he could be considered his obsession. Anyone who tries to take Tomoe away from him instantly dies which is why he wants to kill Yukiji for he is convinced that she has stolen his ‘prized possession’ and he doesn’t take too well to people taking the things he considers his. Tomoe, on the other hand, simply changed his thoughts on Akura-ou from ‘someone to kill time with’ to ‘that annoying cousin who won’t leave me alone’. Akura-ou is, after all, always stealing his things which just really gets on his nerves but, to the other, it’s a never ending game of tag as finds enjoyment in the frustrations he makes Tomoe experience.
Much alike at how Tomoe fell in love with Yukiji at some disclosed point in time and makes a contract with a fallen god, Akura-ou finds out about it and, in his confusion, sets out to find him for he can’t understand why he would make such a wish until the name ‘Yukiji’ rings about. It’s unknown if he killed Yukiji or not, but, either way, after this point in time he and Tomoe cease from being close as the former now believes that his once ‘brother’ turned insane and so he grew to hate him, most likely from confusion and frustration. The sad part is that even when he is in the body of a young boy in the present time, he still fails to understand why Tomoe would drift away from him like he did.

First PERSON:What is this? Magic?
[ Despite being known as the vicious Tomoe, it’s easy to tell that he, 1 ) didn’t read the manual on how to use the device he now found himself owning and, 2 ) was quite confused. Being from a period that lacked anything quite like this, his confusion is quite understandable. Even so, after some button pressing, he managed to get this strange device working which was a relief. Staring at it in his bewilderment, he attempts to remain calm - a skill he had perfected over the years. ]
If any of you so much as value your lives, I would like to be informed on my current whereabouts and for the reason why I’m here to be explained. And another thing before you answer my other questions, but if any of you happen to meet a woman by the name of Yukiji I want you to tell me her locate straight away. You have precisely 24 hours.
[ This call has been disconnected. ]
Third PERSON:Even though Tomoe had been in this place that went by ‘Exsilium’ for a while now, the fox yokai was having a difficult time getting accustomed to the futuristic nature of the world. When compared to the era he originally came from—the Edo period—the unfamiliar sights that surrounded him made locating Yukiji a harder task than it usually was.
After spending a large majority of his time trying to track down the woman who had caught his interest because of her fierce and defiant personality, the white haired fox yokai sat in a tree as he looked over at the entire landscape of this new world he found himself now in. In the time he had spent perched high up, a thought crossed his mind while the slight feeling of boredom gnawed at the back of his head. Just what, exactly, did this world have to offer to someone like him? With this type of question in his mind, he brought the pipe to his lips as he took in a breath as grey smoke exited from the butt of the object.
“How boring,” the wild fox thought to himself as he threw his head against the bark of the tree. “Even in the future, humans are nothing more than ants.” Small, weak, and pathetic; the three words that described the human race nicely. Compared to him, they were just tiny and insignificant— even when being attacked, all they could do was cower and scream as they begged for their lives. Humans truly were pathetic, and the women were only capable of being toys to use for the sake of entertainment and pleasure. The women were just possessions of man.
... And yet, how was it that this one single woman could make him feel a type of pain he had never once experienced just by saying that she hated him? Remembering the cold words she’d spoken to him, Tomoe clenched his jaw in frustration as he gritted his teeth as though trying to bear with a form of pain. “Just what am I thinking?” He muttered to himself as he allowed one of his hands to brush through his long white hair, “To be affected this much by some harsh words from a human woman...” Why was it that he was so irritated over the words that had been spoken to him after he had saved her from the hands of that damn underling that Akura-ou had sent out? If it wasn’t for him, Yukiji would be dead. That’s right; that woman should be grateful to him for saving her life. Instead of yelling things like ‘I hate you’, she should be bowing down at his feet and calling him ‘Tomoe-sama’.
“That woman is just a toy I’m playing with out of boredom. When she becomes predictable, I’ll throw her away and let the other yokai eat at her flesh. Until then, she belongs only to me and I will keep her hidden where no one can find her.” Tomoe thought to himself as he took one last smoke from his pipe.
